Massillon Means Business

Massillon is located in western Stark County at the southern edge of the Northeast Ohio industrial complex. The population of Massillon is 31,325 (2000 Census).

Transportation has been a major factor in Massillon's growth. The Ohio-Erie Canal was an early stimulus, and later rail service furthered Massillon's development. Today, Massillon is served by three major railroads.

Highway transportation is important to area commerce. Route 21 (a four-lane limited access highway) provides excellent access to Cleveland and Akron to the north, and also links up with 1-76, 1-77 and the Ohio Turnpike. U.S. 30 provides a good fourlane, east-west artery. These are supplemented by 93, 172, 236 and 241. Sixty motor freight lines are franchised to operate in Massillon.

Air transportation is available to Massillon via Akron-Canton Airport, located 12 miles north. This airport, served by U.S. Air, United, Continental, Air Wisconsin, and Northwest Airlink, also accommodates executive aircraft. Air freight service is also available.

Massillon has experienced relatively steady growth. Early industrial growth was in basic steel and large machinery manufacture. Today, employment in these fields has declined. New industries locating in Massillon are diversified, adding stability to the area's economy. Present residential growth is in tracts of land on the city's southern and western boundaries. Residential neighborhoods in the city and adjacent townships offer a fine selection of all types of homes.

Cultural and recreational opportunities available to Massillon residents include those of the surrounding large urban areas, plus local features such as a working section of the Ohio-Erie Canal at nearby Canal Fulton. Summer activities include swimming, fishing and boating in the Muskingum Conservancy Parks, 30 miles southeast.

The people of Massillon are enthusiastic supporters of their community. This is most evident during football season when the Massillon Tigers, a perennial Ohio Scholastic football power, display their skills. This enthusiasm is further exemplified by the accomplishments of the Massillon Development Foundation (MDF). The MDF has been successful in promoting economic development and numerous industrial facilities. Tracts of industrial property have been acquired and proper zoning and utility services implemented to accommodate industrial growth.
