Massillon City Hall In 1826 James Duncan created a canal town rich his wife named after Louis XVI's Bishop of Clermont, Jean-Baptist Massillon. Early settlers found an area rich in coal, clay and sandstone, and fertile farm land. Over the years industries such as Sterilite, Crown Cork & Seal, A.R.E., and Heinz have benefited from the innovative spirit of Massillon entrepeneurs. CULTURAL ASSETSMassillon Public Library
Massillon Public Library is located in the 1830's home of James Duncan. Spring Hill Farm, built in the 1820's, was a stop on the Underground Railroad and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Fourth Street Historic District, including Five Oaks, home of the Massillon Woman's Club, is also listed on the National Register.

The Massillon Parks and Recreation Department beautifully maintains more than 400 acres of public parks which include
picnic pavilions and playground equipment as well as areas for tennis, soccer, basketball, softball, volleyball, inline-hockey, skateboarding, and fishing. They also maintain a walking / jogging path, and several miles of paved walking / bike trails in the city.
